Conservation Programs
At Joseph & Josephine’s (J&J), our conservation initiatives combine traditional Hawaiian stewardship values with innovative, science-based approaches to protect Maui’s natural and cultural resources.
Preserving Ahupuaʻa Systems
In FY 2024, through support from the County of Maui Environmental Protection & Sustainability Division, J&J led Phase I of the Maui Nui Pet Hui Project, engaging over 100 community members in discussions about sustainable management of Axis Deer, one of Maui’s most pressing ecological challenges. This project increased awareness of invasive species impacts, promoted humane harvesting and wildlife management, and explored cooperative opportunities to develop local markets for Axis Deer meat as a sustainable pet food product.
To further advance landscape-level restoration, J&J is also enrolled in the USDA NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Through this partnership, we are implementing fencing, brush management, tree and shrub pruning, mulching, and pasture planting to control invasive species, improve soil health, and mitigate the effects of drought and climate change in Kaupō.
Together, these programs demonstrate J&J’s holistic approach to conservation, food security, and community resilience—restoring balance between people, animals, and ʻāina through collaborative stewardship and innovation.
